Travel to Thailand with a Venezuelan Passport Extension: Visa, Airport and Recommendations

Recibiendo la visa en el aeropuerto de Tailandia

My personal experience as a Venezuelan traveling with a passport extension

If you are planning to travel to Thailand and your country, like mine, is among those that require a visa, I have good news! The process to obtain the visa is quite friendly and simple.

Thailand is a wonderful country. Its nature, gastronomy, entertainment, spirituality, and cultural diversity make it a unique and very appealing destination. It is also known for being quite friendly to the traveler’s budget.

Do you need a visa to travel to Thailand? | How to verify consular requirements before traveling

Let’s start with the first step: gathering information.

Before even deciding which airline I would fly with, I searched for consular information to verify that all my requirements were up to date (my trip took place in 2025). Here you can check whether your passport country requires a visa.

I contacted the embassy via email and they were always very diligent in their responses. I will leave the contact links for you. In the case of Venezuelans, the embassy assigned to provide consular services is the Royal Thai Embassy in Lima, Peru.

However, don’t worry—you do not necessarily have to travel to Peru. You can also apply for an E-Visa from home, completing all the requirements online.

Visa On Arrival in Thailand: how it works

My trip was not planned to be very long, so I opted for the Visa On Arrival regime.

It is important to know that this visa, as the name suggests, is processed upon arrival at the immigration checkpoint at your destination airport in Thailand. There you will find an office specifically dedicated to this process.

When you arrive, look for it. Airport staff are usually very friendly and will guide you in the right direction.

Keep in mind that not all airports offer this service, so in the links mentioned earlier you will find the list of airports where the Visa On Arrival is available.

Visa On Arrival requirements

It is important to have all your documents ready to show the immigration officer.

One key detail: bring your visa photo printed. Yes, printed. They will need it to attach it to the short form you will complete upon arrival (provided by the officers).

Additionally, you should bring:

  • Citizenship from a country eligible for the Visa On Arrival program

  • Your International Yellow Fever vaccination certificate

  • Payment for the visa fee in Thai baht (THB), the local currency

  • Travel exclusively for tourism purposes

  • Complete the Visa On Arrival application form (available at the immigration checkpoint)

  • A passport-size photo (4 × 6 cm)

  • Proof of departure from Thailand (return flight or onward ticket)

  • Proof of accommodation

  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the trip

In my case, I was carrying US dollars. After getting off the plane, I looked for a currency exchange at the airport (yes, there are several) and exchanged only what I needed to have the exact amount.

I do not recommend exchanging more money than necessary at the airport, since exchange rates there tend to be quite low.

Pro tip: the officer will ask for the documents one by one. Do not rush ahead—just wait for each instruction and keep everything ready.

My experience getting the Visa On Arrival

My Visa On Arrival process was very smooth. The immigration officers and staff were very diligent and gave me clear instructions.

I give that process 5 out of 5 stars.

It only took a few minutes, although I was also lucky: at that moment it was just me and a couple of other tourists completing the process.

Do they accept a Venezuelan passport with an extension?

And now… drumroll to answer the big question.

Yes. They accepted my Venezuelan passport with an extension.

Later I will tell you about the drama I had with airlines regarding the Venezuelan passport extension.
